Sport mobilities from the YMCA Basketball Museum in Thessaloniki, GR
|
When we talk about sports events, either regional, national or international, a main aspect of them is mobility. It is the actual mobility of people, athletes but also coaches, officials, administrators and sport scientists, not to mention sports fans. There is also another aspect of mobility that is actually represented at the YMCA Basketball Museum of Thessaloniki and it has to do with the mobility of ideas and of know how. Mobility enters the narratives of the Museum as part of its history and the history of Basketball and its trajectory to Greece as well as the diffusion of the sport to the city of Thessaloniki and Greece as well. It is also understood in different research and interpretative schemes. The strength of the Museum is that it uses objects as trigger points to memory in order to tell different stories of mobility and has the educational tools to produce lived experiences to its audiences. The material culture of basketball is a treasury of stories of mobility and the expertise of the Museum is to communicate them in order to educate as well to entertain the viewer.

In the centre is the emblem of Fenerbahçe basketball club crowned by three stars, a reference to the titles won by the team. On this side of the board is the signature of Željko Obradović with a permanent marker. Coach boards like the one presented are often used by coaches to visually demonstrate game systems. Because of its mobility, the coach board is a transferable object that coaches use wherever they need to communicate with their team. This includes showing the movement of players on the field. Petrović JerseyAoLEs:
Humanities (geography; history; religion, values and ethics; business studies and social studies) Languages, Literacy, and Communication (Greek, English, Croatian, and international languages as well as in literature) Health and Well-being (sports, physical health and development, mental health, and emotional and social well-being) This jersey is associated with Dražen Petrović (1964-1993). Petrović won medals with the Yugoslav and then Croatian national teams at the Olympics, FIBA World Cup and FIBA Eurobasket. He also played for the European teams of Cibona Zagreb and Real Madrid, and for the NBA teams Portland Trail Blazers and New Jersey’s Nets. Petrović died in a car accident in 1993 at the age of only 28. On the back there is a handwritten signature of “Petrović Biserka”, Dražen’s mother. The jersey was made in large quantities for the Dražen-Petrović Museum in Zagreb. It was purchased in Zagreb by a representative of the Thessaloniki YMCA Basketball Museum, who asked Biserka Petrović to sign it as a donation for the museum. The inclusion of this object in a Greek museum also has a sentimental aspect for Petrović’s family, since, according to the press articles published the very year of the fatal accident, he was considering continuing his career in one of the Greek basketball teams before his sudden death.
