The FINDS STORIES exhibition
|
The Finds Stories exhibition, explores different mobilities in different historical periods and landscapes. From the short range cyclical movement of pastorals to the long range trade and exchange networks of classical antiquity and the modern sports world. The variety of objects presented here is intended to show how complicated these mobilities are and how a person can be involved in different types of mobility throughout his or her life. The exhibition is also a small journey through time and space. You will travel from a cave on the remote island of Lastovo, where evidence of trade and exchange from the Neolithic and Copper Age to the Hellenistic and Roman periods has been discovered, to the Iron Age settlement of Segestica and the later Roman city of Siscia, where you will explore trade and mobility in the late phase of the Roman Empire. Then the journey continues east to the plain of Baranja, where you will get acquainted with the Germanic populations of Late Antiquity. After Baranja, the journey will take you south to Greece, where you will visit Kythera, an island that experienced large waves of migration to Australia in the 20th century and also an influx of migrants from Albania in the 1990s. You will then travel north to Greek Macedonia, where you will learn about the biographies of objects from the pastoral groups that move seasonally from the lowlands to the highlands. The final stop on your journey is the city of Thessaloniki, where you can explore objects that show contemporary sports mobilities and exchange networks in the Balkans and beyond. The exhibition is designed to integrate the material, biological and artistic stories of mobility in a dialectical way and to link these evidence with educational resources. As you 'visit' a place on this journey, think about the movements you make and the objects you use. Can you see how they affect you and the people around you?
